Many patients do not use their inhalers correctly, failing to inhale at the correct flow rate. International asthma management guidelines call for inhaler review.

In-Check DIAL G16 enables healthcare professionals to coach patients to use their inhalers correctly. The device measures peak inspiratory flow rate, and can simulate the resistance characteristics of the specific inhaler of a patient, providing the device is set on the correct setting. The patient can then be trained to inhale at a flow rate known to be suitable for their personal DPI or pMDI.

To coach DPI or pMDI inhaler technique
Groups inhalers as a function of their internal airflow resistance, in order to accommodate new inhaler devices
Individually calibrated for accuracy
Easy to clean, by simple washing
Can be used with disposable INSPIRATORY one-way mouthpieces
Patients learn to inhale at the correct flow rate
Inhaler training can be conducted quickly
Low-cost, simple yet effective method of inhaler technique training.

The former In-Check DIAL has been revised, now grouping inhalers as a function of their internal airflow resistance, in order to accommodate information on the new devices. There are six resistance groups, five of which relate to dry powder inhalers (DPIs) and one of which to pressurised metered dose inhalers (pMDIs). A guide to identify the resistance group for each inhaler is provided on the In-Check DIAL G16 and on the associated guide. The ability to use In-Check DIAL G16 to measure specific flow rate of a particular inhaler can still be achieved through the use of a specific restrictive adapter. An example adapter is now included in the pack.

The In-Check DIAL can be set to a resistance setting to match any particular inhaler by identifying the inhaler from the chart and selecting the appropriate resistance setting. When the patient inhales their inspiratory flow rate will be shown by the pointer.

The aim is to encourage flow rates that are within the green band indicating the range of flows consistent with clinical efficacy. The arrows within the bands indicate that for DPIs a stronger flow is generally to be aimed for and for pMDIs the opposite applies, a gentle technique is better. Having acquired the correct flow rate patients can then apply this to their inhaler.

In-Check DIAL offers five resistance settings that relate to DPIs; high, medium-high, medium, medium-low and low. A guide to the resistance of individual inhalers is provided. Additionally a sixth resistance setting represents the average resistance of pMDIs.

Specific adapters are available for the following devices:-
Turbohaler, Promedica, HandiHaler, Diskhaler, Clickhaler, Easyhaler, Autohaler/Accuhaler/Discus, Easibreathe, Foradil, Breezhaler/Foradil, Genuair, Evohaler - freeflow setting.

To use adapters the In-Check DIAL must be set to position O (pMDI) and the adapter connected between the IN-Check DIAL and the disposable mouthpiece.

The In-Check DIAL is a tool for doctors, nurses and pharmacists to use and is intended for multi-patient use. Individual patients should use a one-way disposable inspiratory mouthpiece, which should be discarded after use. The In-Check DIAL may be washed in soapy water in accordance with instructions.
